Hello class,
To start us off with our class blog, please put down your thoughts about the definition of class in America. Is there a difference between economic class and social class? Also, state where you think the 'working class' fits in, stating what it means.
After posting, please look up the term 'class' and pose any questions to your classmates, using this blog.
Peace!
Florence

Economic class is just a small part of social class.
I do believe that there used to be a difference between the social and economic class. But nowaday, it seems to be whoever makes it big in money will make it big socially. If you look at all the celebrities that have no contribution to America at all, they are still well known because of their wealth.
How did Yoshino use cultural assimilation in his article??????
I agree with Athena. The difference in class is mostly the very rich and very poor.
There is definintly a difference between the social and economic class in america. I think that the working class fits in at the lower end of both the social and economic classes.
Everybody should try to live together as a community. The difference between class is what making the world worst.
I don't believe that there is a difference between economic class and social class because whoever is popular ecomically seems to be popular socially as well.
I WAS BORN TO BLOG
Everyone is grouped in different social classes based upon their economic status. Financially, mentally, and physical ability are just a few of the things that puts people in a socail ladder.
yes there is a difference between social and economic class. Just becasue one may be in the higher economic class he or she may not be considered to be in the higher social class. The working class falls in the lower economic class
The only classes that are mentioned all the time are rich and the poor.
The working class seems to be in the middle.
SSERIOUSLY
Economic class-something like where you stand as far as money is concerned
Social class-more of where you stand in the population...how popular you are; celebrity vs. a regular joe kind of status
The working class sits right in the middle because those are the people who are not on the top, but not on the bottom. they are in the struggle caught in between the economic and social problems of today.
I THINK YOSHINO IS A BRILLIANT MAN FOR WRITING THIS ARTICLE! HE REALLY GOT HIS POINT ACROSS TO ME ON HOW JUDGEMENTAL THE WORLD CAN BE THESE DAYS
Social classes are effected by people's economic status. They are dependent on one another.
nowadays everybody is trying to be rich so that they could fit in. It's money talk, it doesnt really matter about education. Like most young kids think hollywood is the place to be.
Yes there are differences between social class and economic class. The difference is the fact that social class is where you stand in terms of the people you hang around with, and how you put yourself out there. Economic class is basically how much money you make. The working class fits in because thats how the society will place you in social class and economic class. Basically how much money you make, reflects where you stand socially.
Social class is a way to classify society's people is to different groups, based on thier jobs, and how much money they earn. Working class is the group for people who work hard, more often in labor kinds of jobs. Working class people are also in the economic class, becuse maybe the dont have the education that people in the upper class do. So their jobs arent as good, and they dont make as much money...
I agree with what Mike said, it's an MTV generation. I don't know how people can stand that network. I watched five minutes of 'The Hills' and wanted to kill myself because it would be more fun.
Your social class today in America is determined by the job you have, how much money your worth or have, your educational background, and the power that you have. So your economical background is a part of your social class.
Also, why are there no capital letters in our names? Are we just too cool for grammar?
I do believe that in today's society there is a difference between classes. Just because you fit into one class does not mean that you will necessarily fit into the next. You could be considered economically stable and be a part of the economic class, but at the same time you could be a social misfit and not be considered a part the of the social class. But in some cases you can fit into both classes. If you are considered economically stable taht can enable people to automatically assume that you are apart of the social class. I think that working class is a class of its own. It's neither here nor there. The working class to me is just a class of people that go out into the world on a daily basis and follow the career paths that they have chosen in order to survive in the world.
Economic class effects social class because it effects the way someone can dress, where they can live and who they can afford to be with. Social class depends a lot on economic class.
Class in America is determined by how much one makes salary wise, and also how popular and recognize he or she is to the public. I believe there is a difference between economic class and social class. How much of a difference is determined soley by the individual and the media.
The working class is between the highest class and the lowest. Economically, the working class is more advance than the lower class. Socially, the working class is somewhat at the same level with the lower class.
To me the social class is a group categorized together that have the same taste when in comes to their culture, economic stances and political status. The social class to me is probably majority people of the middle class. People who work in order to survive, but make good money out of their work. People who can afford month long vacations and etc. The economic class to me is probably the upper class. The rich, the filthy rich. The economic class are those extreme business people, doctors, real estate agents, celebrities, artists and etc, that make millions each year. Fianlly we have the common people or the "working class". To me the working class are those who work in order to survive each day. People in the working class to me are fortunate if they have a car, and shelter of their own. These 2 class categories are classes we see through-out the United States. While the Upper class influence the US with great wealth and prestige,a nd lower or working class are those who have low income and lack higher education.
Economical class can be changed if americans begin saving early instead of maxing you their credit cards and filing for bankruptcy.
But most of the new generations want to have the latest and coolest so the money spent there instead of being saved for building of wealth determines their fate in the economical class.
In my opinion The difference on economic class and a social class is that in the economic class is the measurement of the amount of money you have or make. The social class is a class you are in, for example in high school, students place them selves in different clicks and in the adult world it has the same concept of being labeled and divided. The working class I think should be placed both the economic class, and the working class, since the working class pertains to how much money you make, also its a standing such as the working class the rich and the poor. And it divided people, the rich usually doesn't conversate with the poor but the working class can blend in both catagories, since they aren't rich enough to be in the standings of rich and not poor enough. In the economic standings their divided just as the soical class. Also depending on your economic standing usually determines what soical class you are in.
In his article, Yoshino mentions what he calls the "angry white guy" defense, which includes hiding or 'covering' things like depression, alcoholism, and a "working-class background." Why is coming from a working class family something that is considered negative or backward? In tonight's assignment we shall read the handout (on the top) called "Class in America" and then read the article by Alfred Lubrano, called "Blue-Collar Roots, White Collar Dreams... the divided soul of a Brooklyn boy who straddles the class line"
:)
YA TOTALLY AGREE DENNY'S RESTRAUNT GUY! I THINK THIS WORLD SHOULD STOP FOCUSING ON THE LESS IMPORTANT ISSUES LIKE HOW LONG PARIS HILTON WILL SPEND ON RICH PEOPLE JAIL AND FOCUS ON THE REAL ISSUES LIKE THE WAR! I SAY JUST GIVE PARIS THE CHAIR AND DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND GIVE HER THE CHAIR, IT WILL SAVE MILLIONS FROM AIDS AND HERPIES
Can our homework be to watch the Daily Show? I'd like that.
Social class is generally determined by people's occupation, education, and their income. I believe social classes create economic classes. We can look at the social classes and determine what people's economic class is. So thats the difference between them. Economic class directly comes after social class. I believe working class fits in both category.
the difference between social and economic class is that economic class seperates the people into classes based upon what type of income they have, what types of assets they posses, and what kind of power they hold. the social class is when people are seperated into different classes based upon thier race, religion, sex, sexual preference, and disabilities. lower class fits into the economic classification because it is determined by financial issues. the working class makes up the majority of americans who havent gone to college and have worked for the majority of their lives. the backbone of america.
I think that the definition of class in America isnt exact. There are so many different kinds/types of people in America, that it's hard to classify people. Economic class and social class go hand in hand. Where you are (status-wise) in the world depends alot on where you are money-wise. If you think about it, Paris Hilton is higher in social class than the president of UMass Boston.
I, Screwmicrosoft. Have hereby changed my name to Mr X.
If you make a lot of money you'll live in a wealthier neighborhood and live with people who are the same economic standing so you will automatically in their social class. The two are determined by the other.
working class is based on physical labor and hourly wage. It is the lower middle of both social and economic class.
I think it's pretty obvious in the world today that its the rich people that get what they want out of life and it's the hard working Americans are the ones constantly getting screwed over.
